The University of Michigan upset by App. State University

I'll let CSTV say it better than I, as the University of Michigan football team lost to the division two Appalachian State squad:

Well, no one could have predicted this: the No. 5 team in the nation, losing to a Division I-AA/FCS team, in what could very well be one of the greatest upsets in college football history
When I heard the news I considered a few different things: did U of M play their starters (answer: yes)? was Appalachian State suddenly a division one team (answer: no)?

The U of M team is ranked number five nationally meaning they're expected to be one of the best teams around and a contender for the national championship. I mean seriously, Appalachian State? App State is two hours from Asheville and is about as off the national radar as my school Warren Wilson (note: Warren Wilson doesn't have a football team).
The loss is devastating for Michigan, the winningest program in college football. Their national title hopes just went down the drain along with Mike Hart's Heisman chances.
To summarize my feelings about all this, I'll say that the football events of today are equivalent to Warren Wilson's soccer team beating one of the top soccer programs in the country - seriously! At WWC we have played solid division two schools (and lost), but the prospect of beating one of the top programs in the country is nuts. Just like how nuts it is for the University of Michigan team to lose to that team from Boone, NC. Bah.

Edit: Thank you to the person who commented, and to my family for bringing me down to earth about this. First, Appalachian State was the Division 1-AA champion last year. Second they are a solid team regardless of division, and U of M isn't invincible. Good for them - darned mountaineers.

Edit again: Here's a great highlight video for the game.

Oh get a grib Josh - could it possibly be that Michigan (and the Big 10) is not that it is all cracked up to be? Could it be that a Division IAA school, who just happens to be a twice over national champion starting the season undefeated could take on that challenge and WIN?? Yes - as we all said today. Give the Mountaineers the credit they deserve - they are a darn good team and they proved it today.

I respect your point of view! Simply I didn't know the first about App. State except that they were not on the radar for D1-A and that they're RIGHT near Asheville, NC and that people head there when they want to see football. But yeah, after watching a highlight vid I see that they are a fine team. Also, a crazy comeback that included two missed "count 'em" field goals in the last two minutes..

Thanks for the comment
